Chapter Eight

Fiona worked until two o’clock in the morning when the Ugly Stick Saloon finally closed, sending the last patron home in a sheriff’s deputy’s vehicle, courtesy of the county.

Audrey had gone home at midnight after announcing to the customers that only beer, wine and whiskey shooters would be served after she left and Mona took over as bartender.

Fiona had smiled as Mona good-naturedly took the ribbing from the locals.

When the last of the chairs were stacked on the tables, she helped mop the floors and took out the trash, determined not to make a mess of it this time. Even though she knew Austin Tate had gone, she couldn’t help looking around for him as she dumped the garbage.

She’d had plenty of time to cool down and as tired as she was, she couldn’t find the energy to be mad. Disappointed? Yeah. She supposed the connection she’d felt with him on the dance floor had been one-sided. She’d almost reconsidered her refusal to go out with the man.

Making a note to herself to talk to Leslie about the intentions of the clients she hand-selected, Fiona climbed into her father’s beat up pickup and twisted the key in the ignition. It didn’t start until her third attempt. The old truck had been in the family for over twenty years. She wouldn’t have driven it if her own car hadn’t bit the dust the week before. Her brother had it in his shop in Hole in The Wall, but could do nothing without four thousand dollars for a new engine.

That wasn’t an option. Not any time in the near future. While her brother, Magnus, searched junkyards for another engine he might rebuild for a lot less, she was stuck driving the only other family vehicle.

She pulled out of the parking lot onto the highway and headed away from Temptation to the Rafter M Ranch. Tired to the bone, Fiona couldn’t stop thinking about Austin Tate. A mile from the ranch gate, the old truck coughed, belched smoke and the engine died.

“No, no, no!” Fiona steered toward the side of the road, using the remaining momentum to drive the truck off the highway before it stopped completely. She tried to start the engine, but nothing happened, not even a chug or grinding noise.

Fiona leaned her forehead against the steering wheel. What else could go wrong? They didn’t have the money to fix her car, and they sure as hell didn’t have the money to fix the old truck. Resigning herself to sore feet, she climbed down from the truck, slung her purse over her shoulder and walked. What was one more mile to the fifty miles she must have walked waiting tables all night?

Twenty minutes later, she cleared the tree-lined drive and stepped into the open, her home in front of her, every light shining from the windows. What the hell was going on? Had her sisters and father stayed awake to make sure she got home okay?

Dragging herself up the stairs, she reached for the front door knob.
